In recent years, China has attached great importance to the protection of wetlands. Through continuously amending relevant laws and regulations, strengthening wetland protection and restoration, and increasing financial compensation for ecological benefits, the country’s wetlands have been effectively protected.

By the end of 2019, China has a total wetland area of 53,602,600 hectares, with a wetland protection rate of 52.19%. The country now has 57 sites designated as important international wetlands, 602 wetland nature reserves, 899 national wetland parks, 781 provincial-level wetlands, and a large number of wetland protection communities. A nation-wide wetland protection system has been initially established.

Besides, China adheres to the International Conventions on Wetlands and combines it with domestic wetland protection. Through international cooperation, China introduces advanced international wetland protection concepts, and technology models meanwhile share wetland protection experience with other countries and conduct wetland assistance training, highlighting the image of China as an accountable big country and making a positive contribution to expanding the global wetland protection network.
