Yunnan has basically solved the problem of wasting water resources during power generation by using digital technology to accurately dispatch water, fire, wind, and photovoltaic power generation, said Director of the Electricity Division of Energy Administration of Yunnan Province, Wang Zhixiang, in Kunming on February 23. Also, it has increased the province’s electricity consumption and expanded the amount of power delivered.

During the 14th Five-Year Plan period, Yunnan will invest 10 billion yuan for smart grid construction.

Yunan is China’s major hydropower province, rich in water resources with plentiful rivers such as Jinsha River, Lancang River, and Nu River. Due to the rapid development of the industry, Yunnan’s hydropower used to experience an overcapacity situation.

Nevertheless, as Yunnan has been vigorously promoting the construction of smart grids in recent years, it has realized digital dispatch and intelligent control of grid and power, according to Wang Zhixiang. By using digital technology and scientific forecasting of supply and demand, Yunnan has basically solved the problem of water waste in hydropower generation. Also, the smart grid has effectively optimized the electricity business environment and significantly shortened the time for users to obtain electricity.

“The RMB 10 billion will be used to build five smart grid pilots in Kunming, Yuxi, Dali, Yunnan’s free trade zone and Weixi County. Yunnan will build up four supporting systems—comprehensive communication network, interactive scheduling and control system, integrated and shared information platform, and comprehensive technical support system by five steps—clean and friendly power generation, safe and efficient power transmission, flexible and reliable power distribution, diverse and interactive power consumption, smart energy and energy Internet.” said Wang.

Wang said that by 2025, Yunnan will build a digital green smart grid that is proactive, safe, efficient, and intelligent in decision-making. By 2035, the green smart grid will be fully established.
