Ant Financial Services announced on the 19th that Alipay will open carbon accounts for small and medium-sized enterprises based on the individual carbon accounts, to evaluate how green the enterprise is. Through building “green mountains and clear waters” via digital techniques, Ant Financial aims to promote the development of a low-carbon economy.

In 2016, Ant Financial launched Ant Forest, a green initiative where users can open a carbon account on Alipay. The carbon emissions saved by users via paying bills of water, electricity, gas, and online purchases on Alipay are counted and converted into virtual “green energy points” that accumulate to grow a virtual tree.

When the virtual tree is fully grown, Ant Financial will invite charity partners like Alxa SEE Foundation and China Green Foundation to plant a real tree to encourage low-carbon behaviors.

As of now, there are more than 230 million users on Ant Forest, and more than 9 million trees have been planted and maintained in Alxa, Inner Mongolia, Ordos, and Minqin, Gansu.
