According to Henan Provincial Department of Forestry, Henan has recently launched the construction project of building an ecological corridor along the Grand Canal. In the next three to five years, Henan will strengthen the construction of protective forests along the canal, the forests for water resources and soil conservation, as well as the agroforestry networks.

The project aims at building an ecologically safe canal and an ecological belt with green mountains and clear waters.

The ecological corridor is planned to be completed before 2035. During the fifteen years, there will be mass afforestation within 1,000 meters of both sides of the main channel of the Grand Canal (except for the built-up areas in the city).

Areas of the outer suburbs will be used to build forest or country parks. Areas belonging to villages will be used for ecological restoration and improvement. In critical areas around rivers and lakes with good natural conditions and outstanding environmental functions, the natural ecological space can be expanded beyond 1,000 meters.
