On the evening of August 13th, the official Weibo account of Alibaba Cloud responded to the establishment of a new company named Jingxi, admitting that the company was founded by Alibaba for building high-tech data center and new infrastructure.

According to the saying, the company was named “Jingxi” (“xi” means west in Chinese) because the registration location was in Zhangjiakou, west to Beijing.

According to Tianyancha, an information provider of enterprises in China, on August 6, Alibaba registered a new company named Alibaba Jingxi Information Technology Co., Ltd., with a registered capital of 500 million yuan, and 100% owned by Alibaba, covering businesses of selling electronic products.

However, the name of the company, Jingxi, was interpreted by the netizens as targeting at JD.com, or Jingdong in Chinese (“dong” means east in Chinese), which become the most-searched topic in Weibo.

On August 14, Alibaba Cloud responded to the interpretation and explained that the name was made without a second thought by a colleague, for the registration location of the company lied to the west of Beijing.

Alibaba Cloud said “Since the name arouses so much controversy, we have decided to rename the company. The netizens have already picked quite a number of names, and we welcome more people involved to think of a name for the company.”
