SVOLT starts mass production of cobalt-free batteries

SVOLT became the world’s first battery company in the cobalt-free battery sector and successfully achieved its mass production.

Chinese battery producer SVOLT recently held a mass production ceremony for its first cobalt-free battery in Jiangsu, marking the world’s first mass-production of cobalt-free battery.

SVOLT became the world’s first battery company in the cobalt-free battery sector and successfully achieved its mass production.

It is reported that the cobalt-free battery produced this time is a product with an energy density of 240wh/kg and a capacity of 115Ah-MEB.

The battery has the core advantages of high safety, high energy density, high cycle life, and low cost, the company said.

Compared with the high nickel ternary battery of the same level, the cycle life of this cobalt-free battery cell can reach more than 3000 cycles.

The battery can easily pass the 150℃ hot box test and 140% SOC overcharge test and has multiple standard certifications such as GB/IEC62660/UL2580/UN38.3.

According to the company’s plan, the battery will be produced at its Maanshan base by the end of this year.
Besides, the first model equipped with a cobalt-free battery has been approved by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT).

According to the latest announcement issued by MIIT, the SVOLT cobalt-free battery will be mounted on the Great Wall ORA Cherry Cat model.

ORA Cherry Cat will be equipped with an electric motor with a maximum power of 150 kilowatts, matched with a cobalt-free lithium-ion battery pack from SVOLT.

According to the news disclosed by SVOLT, the cobalt-free battery has already obtained orders from two customers, and a first-tier international client is also in close contact with SVOLT.

SVOLT began to invest in the research and development of cobalt-free batteries as early as 2018. In September 2020, it released two major product platforms for cobalt-free batteries at the Beijing Auto Show.

Last December, SVOLT announced that cobalt-free batteries have officially accepted global orders.

On April 8 this year, the mass production of cobalt-free cathode materials at SVOLT Changzhou plant rolled off the assembly line.

This month, the first product of cobalt-free battery was mass-produced and rolled off the assembly line.

Industry analysts believe that SVOLT’s cobalt-free batteries have broken the technology monopoly of Europe, America, Japan, and South Korea players with innovations.

In the coming year, relying on the innovation of leading companies, it is expected China will have the strengths and confidence to stand up to compete with international players.
